Why do audience consume film?
People consume film for different reasons the main 4 being; socialisation, identification, entertainment and Information. The theory Blumler and Katz (Uses and Gratifications model) supports this. Socialisation is in my opinion one of the main reasons people consume film, this being because when a new film is released it is talked about through mouth of word within friend groups therefore the friends wanting to go watch it together. Especially as lot of the teenage population watch films because technological convergences.
Identification shows t he audience relating to the character a lot more, showing the plot, environment similar to your real life. Therefore this shows a character being as a role model and could reinforce your personal values.
Another one of the main reasons we consume film is the entertainment factor, this showing escapism from everyday life, whilst filling time throughout the day but also relaxing. We the entertainment the USP of the film will attract the audience.
Information was the last idea in the Blumler and Katz study as many films such as history documentaries, news, magazine. Although socialist realist films are non fictional, so therefore you will watch them for the other reasons.
Who would be our target audience?
The audience is generally a working class audience, as the characters into the film help them relate to themselves, The director is more than likely to cast unknown actors to make the film seem more realistic, allowing the audience to relate better to the characters, making the film more successful.
Our target audience will espically be teenagers as it tackles teenage issues, such as bulima, abusive young relationships and teenage pregnancy.
All the girls in our film are represented in different ways, to hopefully relate to someone in the audience. This show teenagers through social realism that they are not alone.

UK Box office statics
This table shows me that the top grossing production compainies in 2009 were, Warner bros, 20th centuary fox and disney. However these are not British Social realist films therefore are not relevant to my film.
Global box office
This shows that the same big production compainies are getting the top grosses in the box office, this table shows there are not a lot of British based thing showing British films don't do well at box office worldwide, this maybe because it is based on British social issues and british culture.
These independent films have in terms of box office sales are lower than the major companies films but this shows independent films are becoming more popular.
How are British films funded?
British films which are independent in the past have mainly been funded by the UK Film Council (UKFC), they would develop and promote the film industry in the UK nd distibute money from various sources (mainly the national lottery, this has been done to over 900 films. After the government abolishing the council, the BFI took over their website. The following link gives information on the various functions the UKFC had undertook and whether or not the BFI have taken over these functions or not. http://www.bfi.org.uk/about/policy/bfi-ukfc-transfer.html
The BFI is now the lead body for films in the UK which includes a role as a lottery distributor, with responsibility for funding film development and production; training; distribution and exhibition and supporting UK films worldwide.
